Eight youths who were caught by the authorities jumping off the Pescadores Beach pier in Albufeira face fines of between €400 and €2,500.
According to Commandant Cruz Martins of the Portimão Port, a ban on pier jumping was enforced at the site last year after some accidents caused serious personal injury.
He said: “A metal barrier and warning signs have been installed at the pier entrance, however these have been ignored.” Stricter inspection by the Maritime Police has been necessary to prevent further accidents at the pier.
