ONCE AGAIN, the American Club of Lisbon took over the Municipal Park in Oeiras for the American Community Independence Day Picnic (July 4) and, as ever, it was a huge success. The day also celebrated the 60th Anniversary of the end of the Second World War.
Inflatable bouncy castles, sponsored by El Corte Inglés, helped entertain the children before the games started – and there was no shortage of contestants. The tug-of-war got the crowds cheering for their teams and some were hard fought. The McDonalds face painting team had obviously worked hard by the many colourful children’s faces we saw.
What many were waiting for followed: the all American Pie eating competition! Children’s pies looked small and sedate, but the little chompers soon got through them amid a huge mess, as hands were not allowed. And it was no different for the adults’ pie competition (sponsored by the Sheraton Hotel)! We had a winner: Andrea Oliveira of Sintra (and Virginia) ate her pie fastest.
The food on offer was cooked by the military from NATO and their many helpers. While all this was taking place, the invited Royal British Legion stand, with its Wheel of Fortune, had attracted and signed up 13 new members. Next came the traditional presentation of the Colours by the US Armed Forces and the playing of the US Anthem. Blaine Tavares, president of the American Club, welcomed everyone and handed over to Adrienne S. O’Neal, Chargé d’ Affaires of the US Embassy, who thanked everyone for their attendance, and Blaine and her team for another great event. O’Neal went on to say that nominees are in place for the position of US Ambassador to Portugal and this should happen before the end of the year.
