Pet owners who take their dogs to the beach face fines of up to €2,500, warned the Maritime Police.
The authorities have been inspecting bathing beaches for pet owners disobeying the law. Recent inspections took place in Portimão and Vila do Bispo beaches.
Commandant Cruz Martins from Portimão Port said: “Taking a pet to the beach is illegal and a public health hazard.”
All bathing beaches in Portugal display signs warning that pets are not allowed.
