Petitions in Portugal now need 7,500 signatures to be discussed in parliament

Petitions in Portugal now need 7,500 signatures before they qualify to be discussed by MPs in parliament.

President Marcelo has rubber stamped the law that in effect almost doubles the previous requirement (for only 4,000 signatures). MPs initially hoped to increase the signature limit to 10,000 ‘in the interests of streamlining parliamentary business’ but the president considered this would send a “negative signal to Portuguese democracy”.
