A pet cemetery is one of the three projects that will be brought to life in Lagos next year following the results of the municipality’s ‘Orçamento Participativo’ (OP), which allows local citizens to suggest and vote for their own projects.
Other top-voted projects include linking the areas of Cova da Zorra and Sítio dos Castelo to the municipal sanitation system and purchasing a vehicle to transport people with mobility problems.
Each project will be given a €50,000 budget, representing a €150,000 investment total from the local council.
A total of 917 voted in the OP, with the sanitation project receiving most of the votes (197), followed by the purchase of the vehicle (152) and the pet cemetery (96). Any Lagos resident over the age of 18 was allowed to vote.
It was the first time that Lagos organised an OP, which the council says tries to “promote active citizenship”.
