Pest prevention

Tavira Câmara will be investing 49,000 euros in the treatment of 589 palm trees, which are being affected by a pest putting their survival in danger.

“The Red Palm Weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus) is a pest from the tropical parts of Asia and Oceania and emerged in Portugal in 2007, following importation of palm trees,” a Câmara spokesman said.

“The fight against this pest is particularly difficult because the insect breeds and multiplies inside the tree.”

This project is part of the Municipal Programme for the Conservation and Prevention of the Tavira tree park
