Perfect Storm: three defence ministry officials allegedly received over €540,000 in ‘backhanders’

Further revelations in ‘Perfect Storm’ suggest public prosecutors believe the three former ministry officials already identified among 19 ‘official suspects’ will have benefitted in backhanders, in the form of cash, motor vehicles and household appliances, to the tune of over €540. At issue are 20 contracts which allowed the businessmen identified to rake in around €4.5 million, reports SIC television news today. One of the contracts involved is the one already creating a storm in parliament: the renovations of the old military hospital in Belém which went wildly off budget. For the time being at least, all Perfect Storm’s defendants are free, pending the formulation of charges.
