The third Birdwatching Festival of Sagres is back this year from September 30 to October 7.
The first five days of the festival will be dedicated to activities for schools, while from October 5 to 7 events will be open to the general public.
Boat and field trips, workshops, bird ringing sessions, raptor monitoring and environmental education activities for families are just some of the activities on offer.
Erik Hirschfeld, author of the book The World’s Rarest Birds, will be attending the festival and participating in a lecture.
Sagres is a very special region for birdwatching. Not only is the landscape that surrounds it spectacular, but its natural heritage is unique in Europe. Here you can find a large diversity of habitats – woodlands and farmland, estuaries and sand dunes and the sea – home to hundreds of species of fauna and flora.
However, birds are the focus of this festival, which aims to attract participants with different levels of knowledge.
From August to November, Sagres becomes the country’s major migratory corridor for storks, eagles, vultures, hawks and falcons. The spot is also a great place to observe seabirds, steppe species and passerines.
