Police dealing with excessive celebrations in Viseu on Wednesday evening had to resort to pepper spray to “calm the mood”, reports local paper Diário de Aveiro.
The delight of fans seeing their national team set for a place at the Euro 2016 final on Sunday showed signs of running out of control in the Rossio area of town, where at least one person jumped into a municipal fountain.
According to reports, police made a number of arrests and issued fines – including for the young man who ended up in the fountain.
With the country now on countdown to next Sunday’s big game against France, hopes are that the national mood can be kept in check… and out of the water.
