The 2nd Pepe Gancedo Trophy was played at Santo Antonio golf course in Budens, near Lagos, on August 12.
Pepe Gancedo (1938-2016) was the course architect for the Parque da Floresta golf course which opened in 1987. One of Spain’s most famous golf course architects, his design philosophy was to make courses enjoyable, traditional, challenging and memorable, with minimal alteration to the existing terrain.
To commemorate his work, the competition was played for the first time on the 30th anniversary of the course opening and the intention is that this will become a popular annual event for golfers in the Algarve.
The competition was a Singles Stableford format played from the white tees with the trophy being awarded to the best Nett Stableford score. The men’s trophy was won by Ian Bell and the ladies trophy by Sharon Lewis with Nett scores of 43 and 36 points, respectively. The best Stableford Gross overall was won by Vitor Lopes with 36 points and the best Pro score by Jay Taylor with 38 points.
At the end of the competition, around 90 people attended the prize giving buffet with live entertainment.
Michael Brown, the first golf director of Parque da Floresta, attended the prize giving and spoke fondly of Pepe’s talents.
Golf Santo Antonio is already preparing for their next major event, the Autumn Festival which will take place between September 21 and 26.
