Pedro Costa’s Vitalina Varela included in official list of candidates for Oscar nomination

Portuguese director Pedro Costa’s film Vitalina Varela has made it into the official list of candidates for the Oscar nomination for Best International Film, released on Friday by the Hollywood Academy.

Vitalina Varela was nominated as Portugal’s candidate by the Portuguese Academy of Cinema last December, after the film ‘Listen’ which it initially selected, by Ana Rocha de Sousa, was excluded due to being primarily in English language.

Pedro Costa’s film premiered in August 2019 at the Locarno Film Festival, in Switzerland, where he won the Golden Leopard and Leopard for Best Female Performance. The film has won over 22 awards in nearly 30 international film festivals.

In February, on the 16th, the film will be shown online by the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.

The nominations for the 93rd Academy Awards of the Hollywood Academy will be announced on March 15 and the Oscar ceremony is scheduled for April 25.
