PCP communists have accused President Marcelo of being a ‘destabilising factor’ for insisting on early elections. As reports have explained, it transpires that both PCP and Bloco de Esquerda seem to have been hoping the government would opt for drawing up a new budget when they vetoed the proposal that fell on Wednesday – not deciding to go to the polls two years early. It is clear however that prime minister António Costa is gunning for an ‘absolute majority’, which if he manages it, will almost certainly be at the expense of minority left-wingers, like PCP and BE.
