Payment delays sees Minho music academy close its doors

A Minho music academy – one of the 53 state-funded artistic schools throughout Portugal that ensures hundreds of children receive classical musical education – has been forced to close its doors after 50 teachers and other workers have held out for six months without salaries.

The education ministry has blamed payment delays on the requirement for the accounts court to scrutinise government spending.

But the accounts court has told reporters that the delays stem from the ministry, which only submitted “the majority of requests” to pay subsidies to the country’s artistic and professional schools in December.
