Pay off

THE PORTUGUESE department of Social Security is owed 137 million euros in unpaid national insurance contributions, most by independent workers.

One in five freelancers, most on green receipts, recibos verdes, were last week notified by Segurança Social to pay off outstanding contributions stretching back to January 2006 and ranging from 50 euros to an average outstanding debt of 1,800 euros.

The 76,000 workers that failed to pay a monthly contribution averaging out at between 185 and 198 euros were charged 1.85 euros per month in interest payments plus a 40 euro fine (20 euros for each year outstanding).
