Malpractice charges are being brought against an on-call doctor who, as he was having his lunch, stated he was not available to attend an emergency call. Nurses alerted the doctor to the fact that a patient was suffering from complications following surgery; the patient died whilst the doctor ate his lunch. In his defence, the physician claimed “his hunger would affect his performance”. The patient’s death occurred in 2006, in Mirandela’s hospital centre, and the court proceedings started last week.
