Passos Coelho in poignant Algarve walkabout

Gently supporting his wife who is bravely fighting cancer, Portugal’s PM Pedro Passos Coelho got a warm reception on his first Algarve walkabout as the couple embarked on their traditional family summer holiday in Manta Rota.

With plans to “switch off” and “leave politics to one side as much as possible”, the PM shook hands, answered questions from journalists, smiled readily and never once let go of his wife’s hand.

This was Laura Ferreira’s second public appearance since she lost her hair due to chemotherapy.

The 50-year-old mother-of-two is battling bone cancer.

As the Portuguese press pointed out, this was the calmest walkabout we’ve seen in recent years. In 2013 and 2014, people’s reactions were very different, with many voicing protests over the Algarve’s tolls.
