Passion of Christ procession in Pêra

Palm Sunday (March 28) sees the celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ at a pre-Easter procession called Paixão de Cristo (Passion of Christ) in Pêra.

Organised by Pêra Parish Council and Pêra Parochial Centre, this long-standing tradition was re-introduced in 2005 and then held again in 2006 and 2008.

The organisers had hoped that the event could be held annually but Carlos Cristovão, member of the organising committee, told the Algarve Resident: “We decided to organise the event every two years instead because of the work involved.”

The procession has always been held on Palm Sunday and this year will take place from 9pm, beginning at São Francisco church in Pêra.

Some 150 volunteers are involved and local businesses, Silves Câmara, Pêra Parish Council, Silves Fire Department and Armação de Pêra GNR have provided support.
