Parking in handicapped bays will lop two points off licences from tomorrow

We have all been warned. Anyone parking – no matter how briefly – in a bay reserved for handicapped drivers will from tomorrow (Saturday) be punishable with two points automatically lopped off their driving licence, and a fine.

The development follows publication of a new law in State newspaper Diário da República (DR) today (Friday).

According to reports, road safety authority ANSR now regards this kind of traffic infraction as “serious”.

Another law, also published today in DR establishes that every public body providing carparking space must include free bays for the disabled.

The moves follow proposals put forward by the government’s left-wing ‘ally’ Bloco de Esquerda.
