Parish councils spent “more than €40 million” on Covid-19: government yet to stump up as promised

According to Diário de Notícias today, “the government promised to compensate municipalities and parish councils for expenses assumed during the combat of the pandemic”. But so far, while municipalities have seen a €55 million repayment ‘approved’, parish councils haven’t seen anything. Says Jorge Veloso, of ANAFRE, the national association of parish councils, his members will have to wait for the new government to be formed, and then see what happens. In the meantime, many struggle on stretched budgets which are still accommodating ‘extra measures’ and/ or ‘extra support’ prompted by the Covid pandemic.
