Parents hounded through courts over unpaid lunch money

Matosinhos council is taking court action over what it claims are €85,000-worth of unpaid lunch bills.

The monthly amount most parents have to pay for the children to eat in school canteens is €20, writes national tabloid Correio da Manhã, but somehow hundreds of parents have managed to skip payments – with this whopping shortfall now a major problem.

A source from the council has guaranteed that no children in pre-school or primary education will go hungry, but it has said nothing about the situation for older children whose parents owe money.

Meantime, “penhoras” (seizures) are being taken out through the local courts.
