The pandemic has served to aggravate even further the already enormous inequalities in distribution of wealth in Portugal. This is the dismal result of a study undertaken by economist Eugénio Rosa who also alluded to what he termed “profoundly unjust fiscal policies”. In a week when everything seems to turn on the EDP dams sale ‘scandal’ of saving €110 million in stamp duty, Mr Rosa gave this current controversy as one of the many examples of ‘profound fiscal injustice’ along with what Sweden’s finance minister has termed “Portuguese naivety” in allowing wealthy retirees from rich countries to get away without paying income tax (click here).
