Paderne castle to be promoted as regional attraction

Offering a diverse range of activities for visitors to the Algarve, and specifically the Albufeira municipality, has led to a protocol to promote the historic site of Paderne castle being formed.

On February 21, Albufeira Câmara signed a protocol in conjunction with the regional directorate of culture for the Algarve to form a partnership between the two entities with the aim of promoting the public enjoyment of the historic castle.

Albufeira Mayor Desidério Silva said: “History and heritage are increasingly important factors for visitors looking at choosing a destination and it is essential that we promote the heritage of the municipality to now include Paderne castle.”

He added: “This unique monument in Portugal needs to be shown to the public and while cultural and educational facilities must be developed at the site, so too should an attraction component of the castle.”

Dália Paulo, the regional director of culture, said of the protocol: “Today is the first day in a new history of Paderne castle, a day which marks the return of this asset to the people and it is imperative that we continue with this project to offer the historical site as a tourist attraction for the area.”

Plans within the protocol include making the space available for educational and leisure activities and the construction of a reception area outside the castle to welcome visitors and advertise the features of the historical site.
