Portugal’s movie-goer boom has continued through the summer, giving the industry a lot to smile about after a terrible 2014.
In total, 10.8 million people have gone to the cinema this year (up to October 7) – over two million more than the same period last year (+25.6%). Revenue has reached a total of €55 million (+24.3%), according to data from Portugal’s cinema and audiovisual institute ICA.
July and August were among the best months, with audiences and receipts increasing by over 40%.
Animated children’s film ‘Minions’ was the most viewed film so far this year, seen by around 927,000 people, followed by ‘Fast and Furious 7’ (832,000), Portuguese film ‘Pátio das Cantigas’ (599,000) and ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ (501,000).
It is the news the industry was praying for after many years of decline. [email protected]
