Over €156 million in escudo banknotes still ‘out there’ somewhere

They could be in collections, taken by tourists as souvenirs, or simply lost in forgotten hidey holes but almost 15 years since the introduction of the euro, there are almost 20 million escudo banknotes – amounting to a value of €156.1 million – waiting to be exchanged at the Bank of Portugal, writes Público. Exchanges of 20, 50 and 100 escudo notes can take place up until 2022.
