Since new rules were adopted in the Highway Code, police have been raking in money from fines, penalising 3,195 drivers for ‘incorrectly’ going round roundabouts.
As many as 60 changes to driving rules were adopted in January 2014, and as Diário de Notícias explains, many drivers remain unclear about them: particularly when it comes to roundabouts. Fines peaked when the rules first changed, and drivers are still being pulled over.
Carlos Barbosa, president of the ACP (automobile club) has blamed it on nationals’ poor driving skills generally, but there has been an undeniable zeal on the part of police to mount roadside checks beside roundabouts to catch infractors.
