Over 30 people had to be evacuated from their homes on Sunday night after a massive sinkhole opened up in Arcos de Valdevez (on the northern border with Spanish Galicia). No-one suffered any injuries, nor does there appear to have been damages reported. At least six people were guests staying in rural tourism accommodation. In all, nine have been temporarily put up in a nearby hotel as the others have gone to stay with family members. Local firefighters and civil protection are meantime dealing with the hole which was caused by subsidence due to heavy rainfall.
