Out with the old, in with the new

The Vila Real de Santo António Câmara building will be demolished at the beginning of next year – only to be rebuilt in the same location.

Architect Walter Rossa unveiled the new construction plans at the IV International Meeting of Illuminated Cities last week.

The building will form a small part of the rejuvenation project of the historic centre of the city and will mirror the outline of the original câmara building before it was rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake.

Câmara President, Luís Gomes, said that the old building did not offer optimum working conditions and, during the winter, with heavy showers, part of it leaks.

The total necessary investment for the project is three million euros and, according to the câmara, 1.2 million euros have already been acquired. Until the new building is completed, the staff at the câmara will work out of an adjacent building in the Praça Marquês de Pombal, in Vila Real de Santo António.
