WHEN PATRICIA Ann Cherry of São Pedro de Sintra opened and read The Resident, she thought there was another Ms. Cherry in Portugal, until it dawned on her that, for taking the time and effort to fill out and return our survey form last month, she had been selected the winner and would have 200 euros to spend with one of our advertisers.
Patricia had never been to the GB Store in São João do Estoril, run by Derek and Nicky McIvor, and so it was her choice of place to spend her voucher. It was like a trip to an Aladdin’s cave of British produce! Her eyes widened as she saw pork pies, a delicacy she has not tasted in all her years in Portugal. Patricia, a jovial English language teacher, soon had us in stitches with her jokes. A trolley full of goods, including a new pair of sun glasses, put a huge smile on her face and all courtesy of her favourite English language newspaper, The Resident! Now she has found a store she vows to return to, even if it’s only for their mouth-watering pork pies!
