news: Organ restoration

Officials from Barreiro Câmara and the Portuguese Historical Architecture Institute (IPPAR) have signed an agreement to restore the original church organ at the Nossa Senhora do Rosário in Barreiro, at an estimated cost of 100,000 euros.

“This project will bring back an old dream within the Christian community,” said Barreiro Câmara President, Emídio Xavier. The IPPAR is expected to contribute 50 per cent of the total cost – a sum of 50,000 euros.

The Câmara will be investing 30 per cent of the total and the other 20 per cent will come from the church community itself. The ceremony was attended by Xavier, Rosa Amora the vice-president of IPPAR and the director of the church, Father Rodrigo Mendes. Xavier took advantage of the occasion to comment that Father Mendes was a “simple man with enormous largess”.
