Orchids and fungi of the Algarve

A talk about the orchids and fungi of the Algarve is being held on Tuesday, March 13, at Convento de São José in Lagoa at 10.30am.

Organised by three gardening groups, Os Jardineiros do Sotavento, Clube Dos Bons Jardins and Mediterranean Garden Society, the talk will see well known authors Sue Parker and Pat O’Reilly talk about the beauties and the beasts of the Algarve – orchids and mushrooms.

Pat will be giving an illustrated talk on his latest book Fascinated by Fungi, an easy to follow guide with more than a 1,000 photographs, many taken in Portugal, on mushrooms, toadstools and other fungi.

Pat has been fascinated by fungi for over 40 years, has written more than 20 books and was awarded an MBE in 2003 for his environmental work.

His wife Sue will be giving a talk, with slides, on her latest book Wild Orchids in the Algarve, which has more than 100 colour photographs of wild orchids with details of their sites.

Entrance fee for the talk will be €2.50 per person and there will be an opportunity to purchase Sue and Pat’s popular wild flower and orchid books at the talk.

The couple is also organising a Wild Orchid Walk, near Benagil, Lagoa, on March 20.

Pat and Sue produced and maintain the ‘First Nature’ website (www.first-nature.com), which receives up to a million visits a year.
