Orcas spotted in Albufeira

Four orcas, more commonly known as killer whales, were seen off the coast of Albufeira on June 16 by a group of tourists who were on a boat trip in the waters approximately 12 kilometres south of the Albufeira sandbar.

Speaking to Correio da Manhã, Catarina Fonseca, a biologist from the Marine Environment Investigation Association, who works with the boat trip organisers, said: “The orcas normally swim past the Algarve on their way to Gibraltar as they are after the tuna, but it is difficult to spot them so this sighting is interesting.”

Although the sex of two of the orcas could not be identified, she said: “Two young females came very close and were just four metres away from us.”
