This weekend marks the return of the Orange-Flavoured Weekend (Fim de Semana com Sabor a Laranja’) in Silves, a gastronomic event where local restaurants pay tribute to the town’s famous oranges.
Between Friday and Sunday (February 18-20), each participating restaurant will present dishes which shine the spotlight on the potential of the town’s oranges in cuisine.
Twenty-seven restaurants are taking part in the event this year: A Nova Mesquita; Art’aska; Atelier 47; Barbinha; Café da Sé; Café Inglês; Casa Velha – Restaurante / Marisqueira; Chapim – Cafetaria Lounge Bar; Churrasqueira Valdemar; O Compromisso; O Pina; Pérola do Arade – Restaurante Self-Service; Ponte Romana; Recanto dos Mouros; Salsa & Tomilho (Parsley & Thyme); Sushi Love, Ú Monchiqueiro 1; Ú Monchiqueiro 2; Victoria´s; Xelburger; Os Malandros Burgers; O Barradas; Café Castelo de Silves; Marisqueira Rui; Restaurante – Bistro Rainha, Tasca da Praça and Restaurante Ourique.
“Menus are very diverse and will always feature the queen of the orchard, the Silves orange, which due to its unique and exceptional characteristics will give even more flavour to the gastronomic propositions, accompanied by a good Silves wine and complemented with delicious citric desserts,” the local council says in a statement to the press.
The event will also give diners a chance to win one of three weekend getaways at local hotels. To take part, all you have to do is enjoy a meal at one of the restaurants, fill out the coupon and attach the receipt. The draw will take place on February 20 at Fissul, where the town will also be hosting the sixth edition of its orange show ‘Mostra Silves Capital da Laranja’.
Adds the local council, the ‘Fim de Semana com Sabor a Laranja’ event is part of the municipal strategy to promote the ‘Silves, Capital da Laranja’ (Silves, Orange Capital) brand, which seeks to increase the notoriety of the local oranges and their producers.
“A weekend completely dedicated to the gastronomy created with this product will highlight the unique characteristics of oranges and other citric fruits produced in the borough, such as their sweetness, quantity of juice and delicateness of exceptional aromas,” the local authority says.
The event is organised with the support of Hotel Colina dos Mouros, Hotel Holiday Inn Algarve and Hotel Vila Galé Náutico.
