Faro
In Loulé, Seruca Emídio won a second term for PSD, beating off the challenge from his key opponent, Socialist candidate and former Câmara President, Vítor Aleixo. Patinha Antão (PSD) will remain president of the Municipal Assembly. Faith in the incumbent Mayor proved very strong, with Emídio securing more than 4,000 votes more than Aleixo.
However, on a more local level, PS managed to maintain control over all its Juntas de Freguesia, including Almancil, and gained Ameixial. The Bloco de Esquerda (Left Block) were delighted to learn they had fulfilled their aim to gain a seat in Loulé’s Municipal Assembly.
Tavira
In one of the clearest results, Tavira President Macário Correia (PSD) scored an absolute majority in his council, winning 53.8 per cent of the vote. His main opponent, Fialho Anastácio (PS), was said to be “so disillusioned” by the result that he resigned from his post as vereador of Tavira Câmara.
Other results Isabel Soares (PSD) secured another victory in Silves and Desidério Silva (PSD) succeeded again in Albufeira. Carlos Tuta (PS) won again in Monchique, António Eusébio (PS) will serve another term in São Brás de Alportel, Manuel Marreiros (PS) won again in Aljezur and Gilberto Viegas was re-elected in Vila do Bispo (PSD). Francisco Amaral will stay in power in Alcoutim (PSD), Francisco Leal returned to win in Olhão (PS) and José Estevens (PSD) won in Castro Marim. In Lagoa, José Inácio Eduardo regained his presidency, while in Lagos and Portimão, Júlio Barroso and Manuel da Luz both won for PS.
