A routine police ‘Operation Stop’ in the western Algarve has caught up with an escaped convict, seven months after he went missing from Grândola’s Pinheiro Cruz prison.
A statement from the GNR explained that “when the driver realised the presence of a patrol and after disobeying the various orders to stop, he set off in the direction of Bensafrim’s Barragem da Bravura”.
Here the escape plan came unstuck. The car the 44-year-old man was driving careered out of control and crashed.
The driver – serving a 14-year sentence for theft and the use of a firearm – was taken into custody, and has been transferred to Silves jail, writes Correio da Manhã.
