Deaths on the roads over Christmas and New Year came to 17 – which according to statistics cited by road safety authority ANSR, is an almost 50% reduction on the tally of last year.
The ‘good news’ extends to a 14.2% drop in the number of people ‘seriously injured’, and an 18.8% fall in light injuries – albeit that accidents themselves were up by 27 on the previous year’s campaign.
