Open heart surgery in the Algarve

Major open heart surgery has been performed for the first time in the Algarve at Hospital Particular do Algarve (HPA) in Gambelas, Faro, on March 30.

This type of major surgery has to date only been performed in three main cities in Portugal.

A team of surgeons from Lisbon has joined the private hospital and open heart surgery is now a reality in the Algarve.

The surgical team was led by Dr Ângelo Lucas Nobre, Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon of Santa Maria University Hospital in Lisbon.

“It was a challenge to start a new unit of Cardiac Surgery, only possible due to the highly motivated team of all personnel of the HPA that helped in setting the unit with the highest standards of quality and safety for patients,” said Dr Ângelo Nobre.

“Three patients were operated on the same day with perfect team work and excellent results. The team travelling from Lisbon to the Algarve to perform Cardio Thoracic Surgery at the Hospital Particular  have been working together for more than 15 years,” he added.

Three patients underwent major open heart surgery, including two British men residing in the Algarve who were submitted to Aortic Valve Repair and a Portuguese man who had a Coronary bypass with a triple arterial anastomoses performed.
