Putting the crisis in the teaching profession into sharp focus, national tabloid Correio da Manhã has revealed that this year only two first-time teachers have gained places – when nationally 1000 are qualified every year.
The women have been teaching languages in Alcochete and Loures – but neither has what could be called a full-time post.
They have been hired to teach just eight hours per week.
As teacher Arlindo Ferreira has commented on his blog, it shows the “renovation” of teaching rolls – following last years 1400 retirements – is just not happening.
Meantime, CM reports that a thousand teachers are leaving university every year, “but they cannot work”.
