LAGOS Hospital’s surgical unit is to re-open, but will cater only for minor surgery, requiring just a local anaesthetic. Patients who need more serious operations will be transferred to the Hospital do Barlavento in Portimão, which is well equipped with an intensive care unit and cardiac support unit – conditions that do not exist in Lagos. Nevertheless, Lagos Hospital will be increasing its out-patients department with the inclusion of orthopaedics, obstetrics and cardiology facilities. In addition, there are plans to accommodate a day hospital for cancer patients in Lagos.
