3kg of traditional Christmas cake!

Online Christmas cake auction in aid of Portimão Soup Kitchen

The soup kitchen will be providing 250 hot meals on Christmas Day

After 2020’s successful cake auction in aid of Alvor’s Lar de Crianças Bom Samaritano Children’s Home, local fundraiser Alison Firth has contacted the Resident about another attempt to raise funds for a very worthy local cause – this time the Portimão Soup Kitchen, which this year is providing 250 hot meals on Christmas Day.

Alison’s mum Valerie has created another fabulous traditional Christmas cake (start the bidding here!) and this year she was ably assisted by her 14-year-old grandson, Marley.

Valerie has been baking all her life and makes up to six Christmas cakes every year, starting the process in September.

The Christmas cake is a traditional rich fruit and nut cake, soaked with brandy and covered in a blizzard of icing with a layer of marzipan underneath and charming Christmas decorations on top. It is eight inches in diameter and weighs 3kg!

Explaining why she decided to support the Portimão Soup Kitchen, Alison told us: “This hard-working soup kitchen serves hot meals, soups, sandwiches, yoghurts etc to up to 250 people, three times a week (Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays).

“They have a large group of volunteers who give up their time to make sure the doors are open to provide this service.”

This year, Christmas Day falls on a Sunday and a group of volunteers have offered to give up time from their own Christmas Day celebrations to make sure the doors open as usual.

Marley is raising funds to provide 250 servings of ‘bacalhau com natas’ (codfish with cream) to be delivered to the Soup Kitchen on Christmas Day morning to help the team of volunteers and to make sure everyone who needs a hot meal will receive one.

Marley and family were also contacted by Carmen Esteves of Restinga restaurant in Alvor to help with ‘Natal Na Vila in Mexilhoeira Grande. This Christmas festival was created to promote the local community and to provide them with an opportunity to come together and celebrate as well as to offer a magical day for the children of the parish.

They have already managed to provide 300 Christmas mugs filled with sweets and chocolates to donate so that every child receives a present.
