One in three road deaths in Portugal have alcohol in blood; one in five reaching criminal levels

No matter how many warnings, fines and threats of imprisonment, Portuguese drivers continue to take to the road after drinking alcohol. Latest figures for 2022 show that, just as been registered for the last five years, one in three road deaths are associated with alcohol in victim’s blood; one in five, levels considered criminal. The most recent ‘Safe Christmas and New Year’ road safety campaign saw 459 deaths on Portugal’s roads, the highest number since 2018.
