If the lady in your life loves red wine you could do much worse than to include a bottle of this sexy Douro red in her Christmas stocking. But you will need to be feeling generous as the price of this wine (Apolónia) is €32.95.
“She” is from the producers of Poeira, one of the Douro’s premium table reds and it is made from 100% Touriga Franca. This variety is not often used on its own but it is the most widely planted Douro grape, forming the fruity backbone of nearly all reds including Port wine.
The 2017 has recently hit the market after a respectable period of bottle ageing and it is a good example of what we can expect from this great vintage. The quality of the fruit really shines through here, resulting in a wine that is at the same time powerful and full bodied whilst elegant and exuberantly fruity. On the nose there are copious blackberry and floral notes with supple tannins in the mouth and deep berry fruit flavours leading to a slightly sweet and very persistent finish.
