One dead, another injured in Ria Formosa boat crash

A man died and another was injured in a crash involving two “recreational boats” on Monday night in the Ria Formosa estuary between Faro and Olhão.

Maritime police in Faro were alerted at around 9pm.

One of the boats, with four people aboard, reportedly rammed the other, causing serious injuries to the two people aboard, Faro port commander Rocha Pacheco told TVI.

One of them, a 26-year-old man, died from his injuries while the other suffered a broken leg and was taken to the hospital, the commander said. None of the four people aboard the other boat were injured.

The cause of the accident is still unclear. All that is known at this point is that the boats were travelling in opposite directions between Faro and Olhão when the accident occurred.

An investigation is underway.
