A 70-year-old man was killed outright when a car careered off the EN125 in Patacão near Faro yesterday afternoon.
An 83-year-old sitting on a bench with the victim was seriously injured and transported by helicopter to Lisbon’s São João Hospital.
The driver of the car, described as a 60-year-old Cape Verdian man, also sustained injuries but was seen able to walk from his car before being taken to hospital.
Say reports, the dead man and the injured octogenarian were friends who were known to sit on the bench, close to a Galp fuel station.
The accident happened mid-afternoon on Saturday. Everything points to the Opel Corsa ‘going out of control’.
There were no ‘brake marks’ on the tarmac, writes Correio da Manhã.
The driver was subjected to a blood test (to check for levels of alcohol). GNR accident investigators have gathered evidence from the scene and talked to witnesses.
Says CM, this was the second accident of its kind in roughly a week. The first involved a car coming off the road and hitting a telephone booth.
