On tour

The 75th Tour of Portugal will take place in the northern half of the country between August 7 and 18.

While Lisbon is the venue for the ceremonial prologue, the remaining 10 stages covering 1,607km will take the peloton from Aveiro to points north such as Fafe, Arouca and Guarda, taking in steep climbs through the Serra da Estrela before reaching its conclusion in Viseu.

Of the 18 teams competing, Efapel-Glassdrive are amongst the favourites in the absence of record winner David Blanco, while Tavira head the six-strong Portuguese entry.

Meanwhile, tour director Joaquim Gomes has hinted that next year’s edition may see a return to the south – good news for all cycling fans in the Alentejo and the Algarve.
