Concerns over press reports that some prisoners on parole in Portugal were not returning to jail have led to clarification from the Ministry of Justice.
In Portugal, there are a total of 11,085 people in prison and 6,688 parole licences have been issued up until July 8.
According to the Ministry of Justice, the reported cases of 62 inmates who did not return to prison after being released on parole refer to individuals violating conditions and deadlines imposed, and not escapees.
Disciplinary proceedings are applied in all cases and include extended prison time and the non-issuing of parole licences for a year.
