Popular marches
MORE THAN 500 marchers are descending onto the streets for some of the biggest processions in Olhão this summer. Between June 23 and June 29, 13 popular marches from Olhão parade through the concelho, supported by Olhão Câmara.
The first procession took place yesterday (June 23) in Olhão’s Jardim Pescador Olhanense. Each of the popular marches reveal a theme that served as inspiration for their music. In Olhão, tradition dictates that the colour and the light of the popular saints run through the five parishes (freguesias) of the council. Tonight (June 24) there is a march in the Polidesportivo de Quelfes, tomorrow in Praça Major Castanheda (Moncarapacho), on June 28 in the Polidesportivo da Fuseta and, finally, on June 29, in the Polidesportivo de Pechão. All the marches begin at 9pm.
20th Seafood Festival
XUTOS & PONTAPÉS, João Pedro Pais, EVA, Toranja, Simone and Nina Sky are some of the major artists who will entertain the crowds during this year’s 20th Olhão Seafood Festival. Promoted by Olhão Câmara, the event runs from August 10 to August 15 and will take place in an expanded arena in the light of increasing visitors.
For the last two decades, the Olhão Seafood Festival has been one of the highlights of the Algarve’s summer. The freshness of the country’s best seafood and the quality of the musical programme all add to the appeal of this perennially popular event. As in previous years, Fesnima, the event’s organisers, have crammed in many exciting acts to enthral visitors to Olhão’s Jardim Pescador Olhanense.
The first entertainment will be provided by rock band Xutos & Pontapés, while on the night of August 11 João Pedro Pais will return to the same stage he mounted in 2003. The group EVA will perform on August 12, followed soon after by Toranja, one of the more recent musical formations in Portugal. Brazilian singer Simone will perform on August 14 and Nina Sky will close the festival on August 15.
