Olhanense snatch a valuable point

Gil Vicente, unbeaten at home and without conceding a goal, were favourites to beat Olhanense, but the Algarve side grabbed a stoppage time goal to secure a point.

Manager Abel Xavier started with Mladen at full-back in place of the injured Luis Felipe and gave a debut to Italian centre-forward Dionisi after receiving international clearance. And it was the lively Dionisi who forced Adriano into a fine save after just 12 minutes.

On the half-hour it was the home side who took the lead when João Vilela headed home Luis Martins’ cross with the Olhanense defence flat footed.

Diogo Viana, the pick of the Gil Vicente team, went close to increasing their lead just before the break. The visitors replaced Mehmeti with Vojtus at the interval and 20 minutes later João Ribeiro made way for Bigazzi.

Olhanense continued to test the home defence as skipper Rui Duarte urged his players forward. Olhanense were solid at the back with Diakhité in fine form and Celestino tidying up any loose balls.

Time was running out – the second of three minutes of stoppage time – as Rui Duarte swung over a tempting corner. Diakhité rose like a salmon and his looping header found the top corner of the net to secure a point that Olhanense richly deserved. Chris Wright
