Olhanense record emphatic win

SC Olhanense SAD (limited liability football section) has changed hands with new Italian investors promising to revive the club that only a few years ago was playing in the Primeira Liga alongside Benfica, Sporting and FC Porto. In fact, Sérgio Conceição, manager of reigning league Champions FC Porto, started his managerial career at Olhanense six years ago.

As part of the new revamp, the pitch at the Estádio José Arcanjo is undergoing extensive renovation work and Olhanense are, therefore, playing two home games on the 4G astro-turf at the Olhão Municipal Stadium.

The first of those games in the Campeonato de Portugal, last Sunday, resulted in a 5-0 victory over Ferreiras FC (Albufeira) who look set for a rapid return to regional football after having picked up just one victory and seven points from their 14 games to-date.

It took the home side just five minutes to open their account when centre-forward Hassan headed home at the far post. Half-an-hour later, Fábio Pereira rose above a static Ferreiras defence to head home goal number two from a corner.

Ten minutes after the break, a well worked move involving five Olhanense players resulted in Caleb making the game safe -the first time this season Olhanense had scored more than two goals in a game.

With 20 minutes remaining, substitute Nilson added a fourth. Six minutes later, the same player was brought down in the box when clear through on goal and the offender Garganta was shown a straight red by referee César Leitão.

Leleco calmly stroked home the resulting penalty to complete a successful day and give the large crowd – admission was free – an emphatic victory to cheer.

On Sunday, SC Olhanense are again playing at the Olhão Municipal Stadium (approximately one kilometre north of the EN125 on the N2-60) against Redondense FC, kick-off at 3pm. The team from Évora are bottom of the table with just one point, having lost 7-0 at home to Casa Pia last weekend.
