A single goal by Oliveirense was enough to consign Olhanense to their first defeat since early February.
After a two week break a full strength Olhanense were looking to cement their position at the top of Liga Vitalis when they travelled to Northern Portugal. In the opening quarter of an hour it was the home side who took control, and the visitors’ goalkeeper Bruno Vermissimo did well to tip a fierce drive onto the bar. In the second period Olhanense upped the pressure but it was the home side who took the lead when Sérgio Grilo headed home from a right wing corner on 56 minutes. In the 70th minute Olhanense brought on forwards João Paulo and Guga in an effort to snatch an equaliser, and it appeared to have paid off when top scorer Djalmir nodded home a defenders clearance only for substitute Guga to be penalized for a push. Olhanense remain top on goal difference from Santa Clara who could only draw at home with Covilhã.
Big match at Olhão
A large crowd is expected for tomorrow’s (Saturday) game at home to Feirense, kick-off 4pm. The match takes on extra significance as last weekend their opponents from Santa Maria da Feira (Porto region) moved into third place with a 2-1 victory over Aves. With only seven games to play and six points separating the top four clubs, Jorge Costa will be keen to see his team returning to winning ways.
