Lowly Desp.Aves, thirteenth in Division 2, shocked Premier Liga Olhanense with a 3-2 victory in the first round of games in the third phase of the BWIN League Cup on Sunday.
The first of five away games on the trot was theoretically the easiest of the bunch. But Manager Daúto Faquirá, without Vinicius transferred to Sp.Braga, and the injured Moretto, Adilson and Djalmir, had little room for manoeuvre with his depleted squad.
A first competitive start of the season for third choice keeper Bruno Verissimo, the first time the team had worn their third change strip of all black but in all other aspects it was very much a second rate performance.
The visitors found themselves 2-0 down at half-time with a brace of goals from Luisinho in the 9th and 37th minutes. Cadu and Mauricio were replaced by Mexer and Ismaily as Olhanense attempted to repair the damage done in the first period.
Centre-forward Yontcha pulled a goal back immediately after the restart when Paulo Sérgio played him through. On 70 minutes João Gonçalves was shown a straight red card for remarks made to the assistant referee and four minutes later substitute Pedro Pereira put the result beyond doubt when he rounded Jardel before slotting the ball home.
With five minutes to go a goal from Toy reduced the arrears but it was too little too late.
“The first 45 minutes were the worst I have witnessed since becoming manager,“ said a despondent Daúto Faquirá. “We argued amongst ourselves, made elementary errors and showed no passion for the game.”
This defeat virtually means elimination from the competition and only victories at Benfica and at home to Maritimo later this month will give Olhanense any hope.
On Sunday Olhanense travel to Rio Ave for a league game where they won 5-1 in the corresponding fixture last season. On Wednesday, Olhanense will travel to Lisbon to do battle with Benfica in the 5th round of the Portugal Cup at the Stadium of Light.
